Abdominoplasty brought back the joy of life after carrying triplets
To undergo surgery or not, Sigrid Holmsen pondered in her blog, describing the anguish she felt when looking at her sagging belly. Christinas Clinic took on the mother who gave birth to triplets.
āMy self-esteem was completely below zero. It was painful to look at myself. I wanted to enjoy my children, but seeing myself in the mirror ruined my mood,ā Sigrid says, recalling how old she felt. āI believe that a young person shouldnāt have to hide under clothes, nor should an older person, and feel worthless.
āThe mother of triplet boys, Steffan, Styles, and Samwise, wrote in her blog: āStretch marks donāt bother me. Not at all. If I only had those⦠well, then there would be nothing to complain about. But thatās not the case. I donāt want to start describing my, sorry, but incredibly ugly belly⦠The point is that I am not at all happy with it.āāØHer followers, and frankly everyone who has given birth to even one child, understand what sheās talking about.
A body that has carried a child is never the same again. And even more so ā if it has carried three children at once!
The Clinic found a solution
The thing that bothered me the most was my belly, Sigrid says. It wasnāt just about aesthetics, it was about health and well-being, she adds. āItās not good if the c-section scar is under a fold of skin. You couldnāt even see my navel.
āāØAbdominoplasty also meant she couldnāt run after her three boys, pick them up, or take care of them. āI thought for a long time about whether to go at all, especially considering the recovery. I thought I couldnāt do it until the kids went to school and didnāt need my help anymore.ā But family and friends promised to help.
Fortunately, she didnāt gain much weight during pregnancy. What accumulated disappeared quickly. However, the sagging skin after the c-section did not go away, and to air out the stitches, she had to lift the fold of skin. āIt was disgusting, bad, and ugly, all those kinds of words,ā Sigrid laughs, who decided to go to the clinic for a consultation.
During the consultation, pictures were taken of her belly, and the best solution was discussed. āIn my case, the only option was a full tummy tuck,ā says Sigrid, who went to the operating table at Christinas Clinic on September 28th, 2002. She was told that there are roughly two types of abdominoplasties. One is the mini tummy tuck, and the other is the full tummy tuck, which involves making an incision along the abdominal line above the pelvic bone and removing the excess fat and skin.
In addition, a circular incision is made around the navel, and the navel is repositioned.
āThis means that all the excess, sagging skin is removed,ā she notes. And by the way, it should be mentioned in advance that a total of 3.3 kilograms of excess skin and fat were removed from Sigridās body!āØShe recalls how nervous she was on the day of the surgery, so much so that she even wrote her last name incorrectly. āFortunately, I was received like a good friend. We joked around, and it was pleasant to be there. It eased my nervousness.ā
Recovery is key
Very few people saw Sigridās former belly. She successfully covered herself with clothes, wore shaping underwear, and loose outer garments. And she mentions that she also experienced the attitude: oh, you donāt need it, why would you go for surgery, you donāt need cosmetic surgery. āBut letās be honest, abdominoplasty is not a cosmetic surgery done for fun. I must take care of my health to avoid infections in the scar under the belly fold,ā she explains.
Overall, both her family and friends were understanding and supportive.
The surgery was performed under general anaesthesia, and Sigrid says she didnāt feel any pain after the operation. However, she did experience a slight feeling of tension. āIt was like I had done a hundred sit-ups.ā Already the next day, she was able to go home. According to her, the recovery was quick and easy. She adds that she did everything as prescribed ā walked and moved around. āBecause I was told: the most effective remedy is movement.ā
The wow-effect hit Sigrid 48 hours after the surgery.
āIs this really me now? Unbelievable! I am still amazed. The horror that looked back at me from the mirror every single day for two years is now in the past. I am very happy and satisfied with my belly,ā Sigrid praises and adds that now she needs to tackle her thighs ā she plans to start running for that.
She encourages other women not to hide themselves, not to doubt excessively, and to take that step ā even if itās just to visit the clinic and discuss it. āIf youāre not happy with your body, do something about it. The result lasts for decades, itās an investment in yourself,ā Sigrid believes.
Currently, she is still undergoing laser treatment at the clinic to make the scar as invisible as possible. And she exclaims joyfully: āYou know, I have a waist! I feel like a completely different person! The navel is beautiful too. Iām thinking of getting a naval ring. As soon as the laser treatment is over. Iāve always wanted a naval ring!ā
Christinas Clinic comment
Abdominoplasty is a surgery in which excess fat and skin are removed from the abdomen and the abdominal muscles are tightened. If a woman gains over a dozen kilos during pregnancy, itās likely that deformation will occur, and the abdominal skin will remain softer.
Weight fluctuations during pregnancy put a great strain on a womanās body. A triplet pregnancy is, of course, an even greater strain. Sigrid is not the only one who has been helped by abdominoplasty. We have performed many over the years.
The focus is to address the stretched skin, which has stretch marks, and the tension has torn the elastic ligaments. The excess skin is removed from the upper abdomen and sides, and tightening provides a good effect. The incision is made in the bikini area and around the navel. The deformity that needs to be addressed is not only superficial. The muscles do stretch, but diastasis, or the separation of the abdominal muscles, do occur. Abdominoplasty always includes muscle correction in the surgical plan. Simply put, the muscles are pulled together. Abdominoplasty also usually involves liposuction, either from the upper abdomen or the sides.
Typically, after surgery, the patient needs a two-week period during which they cannot engage in physical activity. The best option is to stay at home, and if necessary, we provide a sick leave notice. It is not even advisable to drive, as the core of the body should be kept in a straight position. This is necessary to protect the internal stitches. Supporting garment must be worn for a couple of months.
Both men and women who have experienced significant weight fluctuations can undergo abdominoplasty. It is often performed after bariatric surgery. Those who have lost a lot of weight on their own are also welcome. The result is lifelong.
