We have with us Kaisa Viljar, MD, who gives botulinum toxin injections, performs the lipolysis procedure for the face, and minor surgical procedures. Kaisa, why did you choose dermatology as your speciality, and how did you end up in aesthetic medicine?

Our skin is our largest and also most exposed organ. Skin problems may have a significant impact on the quality of life and self-esteem of a person, which is why a dermatologist can help the patient on many levels.

I was interested in dermatovenerology during my university studies already, and my highly inspiring lecturers had a great role in sparking my interest. Working as a doctor in Finland, I saw dermatological issues every day and my interest in the field increased further. What fascinates me most about dermatology is the diversity of the field – there are patients of both genders and every age, and both outpatient and inpatient work can be done, as well as minor surgeries performed, allergies and skin tumours diagnosed, etc.

Also, aesthetic medicine is a very exciting and quickly developing field which allows correcting various aesthetic skin issues, preventing and reversing the first signs of ageing and thereby demonstrably improving the customer’s wellbeing. My interest in aesthetic medicine grew in parallel with my interest in dermatology and I found my way to botulinum toxin injections thanks to Christinas Clinic when starting my dermatology residency.

At the moment, you are mainly administering botulinum toxin injections at Christinas Clinic. Please tell us more about these injections.

Botulinum toxin is the source of many myths that are actually not true. It is a registered medication that has been used in medicine for decades. The amounts used in aesthetic procedures are very small and therefore safe. Botulinum toxin is used the most on the fine lines on the face, but also for successfully preventing excessive sweating of the underarms, palms and soles.

Botulinum toxin temporarily paralyses the facial muscles for a while. A beautiful and natural result is guaranteed by correct injection technique, right dosage and carefully chosen injection site. Injected professionally, botulinum toxin guarantees a fresher, youthful and rested appearance that is natural and does not make the face feel numb. The best result is one that does not look like you’ve had something done but looks natural and accentuates the customer’s natural beauty by smoothing the skin and thereby preventing the appearance of deeper lines on the face in the future.
