The lips are an extremely important feature of the face. Throughout history, lips and eyes have been regarded as the two most beautiful facial features, and for women in particular, lips have always symbolised femininity and sensuality. Unfortunately, naturally full and well-defined lips do not last forever. Over time, lips lose volume and their contours soften. In such cases, dermal fillers offer an effective solution.
As there are many misconceptions surrounding lip augmentation, important questions often remain unanswered. Below, we address the most frequently asked questions.
What is used to augment the lips?
Lips are augmented using a hyaluronic acid–based gel. At Christinas Clinic, we use different products depending on the result the patient is looking for. Redensity II provides a beautifully hydrated and natural-looking result, while Kiss creates a visibly fuller appearance. The most suitable filler is selected together with a specialist during the procedure or consultation.
What causes the so-called “duck lips” effect?
As a rule, the “duck lips” effect occurs when the area between the nose and the upper lip is relatively long and the lips are augmented too aggressively with injections. In this case, instead of lifting as intended, the lip projects forward.
What is a typical amount of product used for lip augmentation?
The amount of product is highly individual and depends on the result the patient wants. Typically, 0.5–1 ml is used per session. It is not possible to create a dramatic “kissable” lip in one go—lip enhancement is a gradual process, and tissue adaptation after the procedure must also be taken into account.
How often should lip fillers be repeated?
Depending on the product, the result typically lasts around one year. However, after a year, a smaller amount of filler may be sufficient to maintain the shape of the lips, as each treatment stimulates collagen production and the formation of supportive tissue in the treated area, which can contribute to a fuller appearance over time.
What should be considered before getting lip augmentation?
Start by finding a highly skilled and trustworthy specialist. It is strongly recommended to have injections performed in a medical facility that does not focus only on one facial area, but assesses the face as a whole. For example, factors such as bite, chin structure, facial profile, the tissues around the lips, ongoing ageing processes and more are all relevant when planning lip augmentation. A specialist’s role is to consider all of these factors and recommend the most appropriate solution. In some cases, dermal fillers may not be the best option for a patient, and a lip lift procedure may be more suitable.
Is lip augmentation painful?
Lip augmentation can be uncomfortable. To make the procedure more tolerable, the products contain the local anaesthetic lidocaine, and the specialist also applies a numbing cream to the lips before the treatment.
How long does recovery take?
With lip augmentation and correction, swelling and bruising are possible. These symptoms usually subside within 2–3 days.
Who performs lip augmentation at Christinas Clinic?
At Christinas Clinic, lip augmentation is performed by one of Estonia’s leading injectable treatment specialists, Jevgenia Hammerberg, who is known for creating exceptionally beautiful and natural-looking results with dermal fillers.
