After years of struggling with 20 kilograms of excess weight, Kristiina felt it was time to make a change. As someone who had found it difficult to maintain regular eating habits and a consistent exercise routine, she began to consider whether gastric band surgery could be the support she needed to help control weight gain and improve her overall health.
We spoke with energetic and positive Kristiina about her decision, how the procedure went, and how her journey compares with that of Sandra, another weight loss patient we have previously introduced.
Why did you choose gastric band surgery for weight loss?
I decided in favour of gastric band surgery because it is not as radical as some other types of weight loss surgery. Although it is considered an effective method for weight reduction, it does not involve irreversible anatomical changes. I wanted to find out for myself whether this procedure could really work, because I had not been able to achieve lasting results with conventional diet and exercise methods.
Excess weight is not only an aesthetic concern. For me, the main reason was the wish to feel better and improve my health. A gastric band can support the treatment of several obesity-related health issues by helping address one of their underlying causes. I know that my current weight increases the risk of developing conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure. I am still a young woman, and these are illnesses that could affect me for the rest of my life.
I also feel that being overweight has a major impact on my quality of life. I want to feel lighter, more energetic and more confident. It may seem like a small thing, but being able to buy clothes in regular sizes, or go to the beach or swimming pool without constantly feeling the need to hide my body, would mean a great deal to me.
You are currently recovering from surgery. How are you feeling?
It is the second day after the operation, and everything has gone well so far. I feel good, and I also had a calm night. Yesterday, the day after the surgery, I was already able to walk around the clinic.
What will your life be like after the operation?
I know I will need to make changes. The biggest adjustments will be related to eating. I plan to follow the recommendations of the nutritionist, reduce my portion sizes and eat more slowly. Eating too quickly or swallowing large amounts at once is no longer an option.
I will also definitely start moving more and exercising. I want exercise to feel enjoyable, not like a punishment. I have always liked swimming, so that is something I plan to start doing regularly. Once I have recovered from the operation, I will also meet with a personal trainer, who will prepare an individual training plan for me. I am really looking forward to it.
